1. The Basics: Channel 9’s One Dev Minute
Channel 9’s One Dev Minute is a great – and quick – introduction to integrating Cortana. Only a minute and a half long, this simple video shows a basic overview of the three major steps: creating a Voice Command Definition (VCD) File, setting up your app to register its received commands with Cortana, and then deciding which commands your app registers.
2. Talk to Your App: Microsoft’s Quickstart to Voice Commands with Cortana
Getting more into detail is Microsoft’s Quickstart guide to voice commands. This guide will teach you how to get Cortana to talk with you, your app, and your users with VCD files and the speech recognition software in all Windows Phones.
Separate from the above Quickstart Guide, Microsoft provides in-depth examples in both C# and Java on how to integrate Cortana into your app. This comprehensive sample covers how to make Cortana activate your app, as well as other helpful tricks.
4. Time to Get Technical: Technet Guest-post Tutorial
Technet has a great guest-post from ‘MVPSouthAsia’ that gets more technical than the previous examples. This post covers a lot of information that’s already been presented in this list, but gets bonus points for providing a download location for all of the source code they show in their text, as well as linking additional tutorials the author found helpful.
C# Corner has a very solid guide on integrating Cortana into app menus – this guide manages to be very informative but still brief, with lots of examples to let you see for yourself. Don’t forget to check “Related articles” at the bottom of the page to see what else you can learn!
Andy Wigly (@Andy_Wigley) is a ‘Technical Evangelist’ at Microsoft UK, and runs a blog with the aim of helping other developers create better apps. Wigley’s post on Cortana Integration is thorough, but easy to understand. If you’re looking for a quick read the length may initially turn you off, but Wigley is a skilled and entertaining writer who shows you can be thorough without being boring.
7. Deep Dive: Microsoft Virtual Academy’s free Cortana Integration course
Nick Landry (@ActiveNick) and Jeremy Foster (@CodeFoster), both Technical Evangelists like Wigly, share their experience in computer speech technologies and mobile app development scenarios. If you’re looking for a quick session head back to the top of this article and check out Channel9’s video – however, if you want a detailed demonstration from two experts in the field, this is the site for you. Unfortunately, this session just passed, but keep your eyes peeled for upcoming sessions and register in advance for the ones you want to attend.
